UC women use Four Unanswered to Down Canton

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's hockey team overcame an early 1-0 deficit as it downed visiting SUNY Canton 4-1 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.  Elizabeth Dohner, Meghan Power, and Danielle Haasbeek each recorded two points in the win.

Canton opened the scoring at 5:58 as a loose puck in front of the Utica goal somehow got past Utica goalie Gabrielle Igo to give the Roos a 1-0 lead.  Whitney Bernier was credited with the goal, assisted by Tess Adams and Hannah Brady.

The Pioneers responded at 16:49 of the first period as senior Samantha Husak ripped a slap shot that fooled Canton goalie Brooke Susac.  Haasbeek and Taylor Dion picked up the assists on Husak's third of the year.

Utica took the lead at 8:32 of the second period when senior Carlie Smith gathered a puck at the half wall and skated towards the goal.  Smith was able to ward off a defender and roofed a puck top shelf on the short side for her first of the year.  Haasbeek picked up her second assist of the night on the game-winner and sophomore Rebecca Brown also assisted on the play.

The Pioneers extended the lead just four minutes into the third as Power fired a shot from the bottom of the faceoff circle through the legs of Susac for her second of the year.  Dohner and Taylor Osowski earned the assists on the insurance tally.

Utica capped off the scoring just over halfway through the period as Dohner cleaned up a rebound for her second of the season.  Kayla Dion took the initial shot from the point, which was blocked by Susac but the rebound ended up behind her and Dohner was able to get a stick on it to guide it into the open net.  Power added the secondary assist on the goal.

Igo finished with 14 saves to improve to 5-0 on the year, while Susac made 26 saves in the loss.

The Pioneers (6-3) return to action Sunday as they host cross town rival, Hamilton College.  Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
