Five Different Goal Scorers lead Nazareth to Semifinals

UTICA, NY – Five different players for the Nazareth Collee Women's Hockey team scored goals, including four in the third period, to lead the Golden Flyers to a 5-3 victory over Utica College Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Tournament. Nazareth advances to play Chatham University Saturday in a semifinal matchup in Pittsburgh.

Top-seeded Elmira scored a 10-0 victory over Neumann and will face No. 6 Manhattanville who posted a 4-1 win over Stevenson. No. 3 Chatham advanced with a 4-3 overtime win over Alvrenia.

Junior Elie Fallieras scored the lone first period goal as she picked up the second rebound after both juniors Madison Nichols and Hailey Redders had shots saved and tossed a shot into the back of the net for an early Nazareth (7-1) lead.

In the second period, Utica (6-7) answered back with a pair of goals including one in the first minute of the period to take a slim lead. The goal at 51 seconds of the period snapped a shutout streak that dated back to February and lasted just more than 400 minutes of playing time for the Golden Flyers.

In the third period, Nazareth netted the tying goal as sophomore Olivia Miller-Johnson scored on passes from juniors Kyla Thompson and Gabriella DeMeo 5:21 into the period.

The score remained tied until 11:44 when Nichols made a fantastic individual effort to give Nazareth the lead. After working the puck free on the side boards, Nichols drove across the ice toward the slot. After being tripped by a Utica player, she fired a shot into the upper right corner over the glove of the goalie before falling to the ice.

Exactly one minute later, sophomore Ally Watrous scored gave the Golden Flyers a two-goal lead as she skated behind the goal and had a wrap-around attempt blocked but collected the rebound and fired the puck into the goal for the 4-2 Nazareth lead.

With 2:30 left in the game, Utica pulled its goalie for the extra attacker and almost immediately, junior Stephanie Kubis intercepted a pass and lifted a shot pass to fellow junior Nikolle VanStralen who shot it the length of the ice into the open net.

Less than a minute later, Utica rushed the goal for a loose puck and knocked in a goal with a crowd of players in the crease area to trim the lead to 5-3 but Nazareth controlled the puck for the remainder of the period to seal the victory and advance to the tournament semifinals.
