STEVENSON, MD - Alvernia University (5-7-1, 3-4-1) secured an overtime win over Stevenson University (6-8, 5-5) on the road in women's ice hockey UCHC faceoff Saturday afternoon.
Both teams were held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes of play. Alvernia had the first power-play opportunity of the game but were unable to capitalize. It was not long before the Mustangs had their own power-play opportunity, as two quick penalties from the Golden Wolves would put the pressure on Alvernia.
Despite this opportunity, Alvernia did not allow a goal as Julia Beaven was able to shut down the Stevenson offense. The first period would end, 0-0.
The second period saw another power-play opportunity for the Mustangs. The Golden Wolves defense was able to hold on again, killing the power play and keeping the contest scoreless. As time ticked away in the second period, Lexi Hooper fired off a shot that was saved by Stevenson.
Sydney Bradley also had a scoring opportunity, which was once again saved by Olivia DeGuire for the Mustangs. Alvernia fired off another eight shots in the final ten minutes of the period, but none were able to find the back of the net. The period once again ended scoreless, 0-0.
The third period kicked off with great defense, as Stevenson had an early scoring opportunity which was saved by Beaven. The Mustangs continued to apply pressure, forcing the Alvernia defense back on its heels. Despite being outshot 19-2 in the third period, the Golden Wolves hung on and were able to force overtime.
Alvernia's offense started fast in overtime, recording two shots in the first 41 seconds of the period. It was not until 13 seconds later, that Olivia Gilida found the back of the net off an assist from Abby Reisinger. This goal lifted the Golden Wolves above Stevenson, 1-0, and was the third overtime win for Alvernia this season.
Beaven had a huge night in net, tallying 44 saves in the overtime win.
Alvernia returns to action this Friday, hosting Wilkes at the Body Zone Complex.
