Power Play Goals Lead King's To Win At Neumann

ASTON, PA  – The King's College women's ice hockey team had a big day on the power play and used strong defense and another outstanding goaltending performance by Syd Dahl to defeat Neumann University 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston.

The Monarchs handed head coach Jordan Ott her first career win with a program record three power play goals. Senior Meghan Mietlicki became the first Monarch to score two power play goals in a game also scoring the first two goals of her career. Erin King scored her first game-winning goal for the Monarchs and her second goal of the year.

King's won the opening faceoff and immediately went to work on the Knights defense as Ali Noeding, Audrey Martin, and Jordan Dittmar all took shots in the first minute. Noeding had her shot blocked while the shots from Martin and Dittmar were saved. The Monarchs kept the pressure on the Knights with Sam Kulman and Emma Clark having shots saved. Neumann was called for the first penalty of the game at 6:49 and it didn't take King's long to capitalize on it. Mietlicki found the back of the net 35 seconds into the power play for her first goal off assists from Noeding and Josée Aitken. The assists were Noeding's first of the year and second of her career while Aitken recorded her first assist of the season and 14th of her career.

The Monarchs were called for their first penalty of the game shortly after the goal and Neumann had their first offensive momentum of the game taking six shots and putting four on goal during the two-minute advantage. The Monarch defense held strong and kept the Knights off the board before taking advantage of Neumann's second penalty of the game. Just nine seconds into their second power play opportunity Mietlicki lit the lamp for the second time off assists by Aitken and King. The Knights would cut the lead with 2:43 left in the period as Lian Sydorowicz knocked back a rebound off a saved shot by Kyra Filighera.

In the second period the teams traded blows, but neither was able to find the back of the net for the first 15 minutes of action. Neumann outshot the Monarchs in the period, but it was King's who was able to increase their lead to 3-1 as King tallied her second career goal three seconds before a power play opportunity was to expire. The Monarchs had tired the Knights out for most of the penalty kill prior to King scoring off assists by Noeding and Clark. Clark recorded her first career point on the play while Noeding tallied her second assist of the game.

The Monarchs were defensive for much of the third period as they were called for four penalties in the period. However, the defense held throughout each kill despite seeing 12 shots during the four kills. Dahl made a few big time saves while the defense stepped up, blocked some shots, and cleared the puck out of the zone every chance they got. The Knights pulled their goalie with a little over a minute left for an extra attacker and managed to sneak a puck into the back of the net with 40 seconds left as Georgia Wunder tallied her third goal of the season.

Dahl finished with a spectacular 42 saves in the win including 14 in the second period and 18 in the third. The Monarchs took a season-high 32 shots led by Mietlicki with seven. Noeding put five shots on goal while Aitken took four shots. Dittmar had a great day on faceoffs winning 16 of 22 while Aitken won 14 of 22 attempts. As a team the Monarchs blocked 13 shots with Ani Quindipan topping the squad with four. The Monarchs had a big day on the power play scoring on three of their six chances while going a perfect eight-for-eight on the penalty kill.

King's will look to keep the momentum of the win going on Monday afternoon when they host Arcadia at 12:30 pm at Revolution Ice Centre before traveling back down to Aston to finish the season series with Neumann on Tuesday.
