Wilkes-Barre, PA - For the third game in a row, Alvernia University (7-7-1, 5-4-1) needed just one goal behind a standout performance from goalie Julia Beaven to earn a 1-0 victory. This time, the goal came from Olivia Gilida as the Golden Wolves downed Wilkes University (1-13, 1-11) 1-0 to earn the series sweep on Sunday at Wilkes in UCHC and MAC women's ice hockey action.
The win was Alvernia's third straight 1-0 victory. Beaven has made 97 saves across the three game shutout streak. In addition to tonight, Gilida also scored a game-winner at Stevenson last Saturday.
After Alvernia was 0-for-8 on power play opportunities against the Colonels on Friday night, Alvernia converted its second power play opportunity of the evening on Sunday.
At the 11:37 mark of the first period Alvernia went on its second power play of the game. Just under a minute later, Sydney Bradley passed the puck across the ice to Gilida who was positioned at the top of the left faceoff circle. Gilida collected the puck and buried it in the back of the net to put the Golden Wolves up 1-0.
The Golden Wolves were held off the board the rest of the game, but Beaven and the Alvernia defense took over from there. Beaven made ten saves in the first period, and 21 saves over the final two periods. The Alvernia defense also made 17 blocked shots, led by Mackenzie Jackson with four.
Alvernia nearly extended its lead in the final minutes when Wilkes went to an empty net, but three shots from the Golden Wolves missed their mark.
Beaven finished the night with 31 saves. Robertson led Alvernia's faceoff with ten wins.
The Golden Wolves return to action on Friday night at home with a series against Chatham.
