BOSTON, MA – Graduate student Nikolle Van Stralen tipped in a shot from the point to tie the game at 1-1 for the Nazareth Women's Hockey team but an overtime goal by Bowdoin was the difference as the Golden Flyers dropped their first decision of the season, 2-1, Saturday in the first round of play in the Codfish Bowl Tournament at UMass-Boston.
Nazareth (6-1-0) will face host UMass-Boston after the Beacons dropped a 3-0 decision to Colby, in the consolation game of the tournament at 12 p.m. Sunday.
Bowdoin (2-1-0) scored seven minutes into the game to take the early lead. Junior McKInley Hoff stopped the initial shot from the blue line but could not control the rebound and the Polar Bears found the loose puck and tapped it into the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Bowdoin held a 17-8 shots advantage in the first period of play.
After a scoreless second period, Nazareth responded to tie the game just 15 seconds into a power play opportunity five minutes into the third period as freshman Corsica Skibinski won a faceoff in the Bowdoin zone and fellow freshman Abby Flanagan send a pass back to senior Ally Watrous who fired a hard wrist shot toward the Bowdoin goal. Van Stralen was in front of the goal and redirected the puck past the Polar Bears goalie for the tying goal.
The score remained tied through the rest of the third period but Bowden had a chance to win the game late in the period when a penalty shot was awarded to the Polar Bears but Hoff was able to make the stop and keep the game tied as the teams headed to overtime.
Bowdoin scored in the three-on-three overtime session after winning the battle for a puck in the corner and finishing a centering pass for the sudden victory goal.
Hoff finished with 40 saves including 16 in the first period and four in overtime before the deciding goal was scored.
