BOSTON, MA – Junior McKinley Hoff made 21 saves including 11 in the third period as the No. 5 Nazareth Women's Hockey team came from behind to down UMass-Boston 4-2 in the consolation game of the 15th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament.
UMass opened the scoring midway through the first period with a goal off a face-off in the Nazareth zone. The Beacons (4-5-0) won the draw in the Nazareth zone and pushed a pass to the wing for a one-timer shot over the leg pad of Hoff for the 1-0 lead.
The lead lasted less than five minutes as graduate student Abbey Luth, playing in her 100th career game, finished a nice rush up the ice to tie the game.
Freshman Audrey Donahue sent a pass around the back of the goal along the boards and to the stick of sophomore Maggie Pfalzgraf who threaded a long pass to Luth who made a move around the defenseman at the blue line and then used a between the legs move to distract the goalie and sent a shot into the corner for the tying goal.
The Beacons regained the lead late in the period with another face-off win and goal in the Nazareth zone. The puck was directed back to the blue line and a wrist shot into the upper corner for the power play goal and 2-1 lead.
Nazareth tied the game midway through the second period as Donahue passed off boards to junior Julia Holmes and she sent a pass to mid-ice to graduate student Nikolle Van Stralen who carried it in the zone and then turned across to the slot and fires a wrist shot past the UMass goalie.
Late in the second period with the Beacons on a power play, sophomore Ivey Lyden won the puck in the defensive zone and sent a pass to the red line to senior Ally Watrous who redirected the puck to a streaking senior Makenna Wiljanen who skated in alone on the goal and went to the backhand to slide a shot past the Beacon goalie for the 3-2 lead.
UMass applied pressure in the early minutes of the third period but Hoff made several key szaves to protect the lead.
With time running out and the Beacons using an extra attacker, senior Morgan Leuenberger picked up a loose puck after a fanned shot attempt from the defensive blue line and firsed a shot from the red line into the empty net for the 4-2 lead.
Nazareth returns to action next weekend with United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action at Neumann and a pair of games Friday and Saturday.
