Reading, PA - Alvernia University (2-0-1, 1-0) scored two unanswered goals en route to a 2-1 victory over Lebanon Valley College (1-2-0, 0-1) in UCHC women's ice hockey action Friday night at BodyZone.
Lebanon Valley opened up the scoring just over 11 minutes into the first period when Alexis Oukes found Cheyenne Wilk who found the back of the net to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves applied pressure late in the first period and broke through in the 19th minute of play when Laila Tosi found the stick of Carolyn Burton. Burton then ripped a shot into the top corner of the net to even the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Alvernia broke the tie in the seventh minute of the second period after an LVC shot went wide. The Golden Wolves pushed the puck up the ice to Abby Reisinger who out skated the Dutchmen defenders and fired a shot that snuck into the far left post to give Alvernia a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Wolves defense would hold strong in the final 15 minutes of the second period with LVC rattling off 13 shots and ten of them were saved by Alvernia goalie Julia Beaven. The Golden Wolves went into the second intermission with a 2-1 advantage over the Dutchmen.
Alvernia's defense continued to hold the one goal lead with Beaven tallying six saves in the final period with four of them coming in the final ten minutes of the game.
Beaven got the win in goal for the Golden Wolves and finished with 26 saves total.
The Golden Wolves were led by Reisinger and Burton who both tallied goals and Tosi added an assist. Amber Steinhilpert led Alvernia with eight shots, Gillian Evans tallied six and Burton added four.
The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Lebanon Valley to take on the Dutchmen in the final game of the weekend series. Game time is set for 7:30 PM at Hersheypark Arena.
