ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Julia Holmes scored the game-winner and added a pair of assists to lead the Nazareth Women's Hockey team to a season-opening 5-2 win over Chatham in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game Friday night at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Nazareth (1-0 overall, 1-0 UCHC), ranked No. 6 in the preseason national poll, opened with a goal in each of the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead. Senior captain Makenna Wiljanen and sophomore Maggie Pfalzgraf each scored for the Golden Flyers.
Chatham (0-3, 0-1 UCHC) rallied back to tie the score with a pair of second period goals including a power play goal and the teams went into the second intermission with a 2-2 tie.
In the third period, Holmes snapped the tie at the 7:56 mark with a hard shot from the point as Wiljanen and sophomore Sydney Swanson picked up assists on the play.
Just 35 seconds later Swanson fed a pass behind the Nazareth goal to Holmes who threaded a long pass up ice to Pfalzgraf who raced in for the breakaway goal to regain the two-goal advantage for Nazareth.
Freshman Abby Flanagan scored her first career goal to cap the scoring as Nazareth extended its regular-season win streak to 10 games dating back to last season.
Junior goalie McKinley Hoff made seven saves in the win to run her career record to a perfect 10-0.
Nazareth and Chatham will play again at 3 p.m. Saturday to complete the weekend series.
