Cox Scores Five Goals as Manhattanville Puts Up 10 to Complete Sweep of King’s College

RYE, NY – Six different scorers netting ten unanswered goals led the Manhattanville College women's hockey team to a weekend series sweep of King's College on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Valiants move to 2-0 on the season and in conference play for the UCHC.

For the second game in a row, the Manhattanville offense was led by Gabrielle Cox, who scored five goals and tallied one assist. Morgan Miller, Holly Meredith, Annie Niedermier, Brysha Schmidt, and Kerry Carr added a goal each. Grace Felicio and Virginia Birnie dished out two helpers each to lead the team on the day.

Scoring began in the first three minutes as Miller fired an unassisted shot to tally Manhattanville's first goal. Two minutes later, Cox would net her first of the day, unassisted, to keep the good times rolling. Meredith would score her first goal of the season in the 14th minute which was assisted by Fjolla Berisha. To close out the first period, Niedermier would score her first of the season as well off of Cox and Charlotte Stanwood assists. Through the opening 20 minutes, the Valiants held a 14-5 shot advantage and a 4-0 lead.

Cox would net a hat trick in the second period alone, scoring all three goals to put the Valiants up, 7-0. The first would come off of assists from Meredith and Laney Nash, while Felicio tallied an assist for the second goal, and Birnie an assist for the third.

With a dominant offense for the Valiants, the final 20 minutes looked just as strong. Brysha Schmidt would tally an unassisted goal at the 2:47 mark and then it would be a back-and-forth battle for the Monarchs. After about 15 minutes, Cox would capitalize on her solid outing with her fifth goal of the game with helpers from Felicio and Birnie. Finally, in a power play with six seconds left, Carr would score an unassisted goal for the Manhattanville 10-0 final.

Cox has been downright dominant in the first two games of the season, scoring 11 points in the series against King's with nine goals.

Jewells Austin had 11 saves in the win and made her season debut in net. The Valiants ended the weekend with two shutouts, one from each goalkeeper.
