Reading, PA - Olivia Gilida netted two goals as Alvernia University (6-5-3, 5-3-1) defeated Stevenson University (5-8-0, 3-6-0) 4-1 in UCHC women's ice hockey action Friday afternoon at BodyZone.
The Golden Wolves fired 12 shots on goal in the first period before Gilida opened up the scoring with a power play goal 17 minutes into the period. Amber Steinhilpert tallied the assist, giving Alvernia a 1-0 advantage late in the first period.
Stevenson leveled the score two minutes later when Maggie Dean and Karly Aguirre assisted Meghan Croyle to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission.
Alvernia took the lead just over five minutes into the second period when Sydney Bradley and Julia Franklin assisted Gilida, who netted her second goal of the game and gave the Golden Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Wolves extended their lead four minutes later when Bradley found Alex Robertson on a breakaway, Robertson beat the Stevenson defender and buried the puck into the back of the net to make it a 3-1 game halfway through the second period.
The Mustangs rattled off eight shots in the final ten minutes of the second period but the Golden Wolves defense held strong with Julia Beaven saving four as Alvernia headed into the final intermission up 3-1.
Alvernia sealed the deal just under a minute into the third period when Franklin netted an unassisted goal to make it 4-1 Alvernia.
The Mustangs attempted to find the back of the net in the third period, tallying 28 shots in the period, but could not find a goal as Beaven denied 13 shots to secure the 4-1 victory.
Beaven got the win in net for the Golden Wolves and finished with 22 saves.
The Golden Wolves were led by Gilida with two goals, Bradley tallied two assists and Franklin added a goal and an assist. Steinhilpert tallied an assist and Franklin and Gilida led Alvernia with five shots on goal with Bradley tallying four.
Alvernia is back in action tomorrow when they wrap up the weekend series with Stevenson at 1:00 PM.
