PITTSBURGH, PA - The No. 15 Utica University women's hockey team beat Chatham University 4-0 on Friday night to earn a UCHC victory. The win extends the team's win streak to a stellar ten games.
The Pioneers were aggressive and fired off four shots within the first three minutes of the game. Utica went on the power play just 3:20 into the game and was able to fire four shots yet were not able to score. Yet, at the 5:22 mark, Maggie Rylott found the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 edge. The goal was assisted by Abby Lillis and Carolyn Whitney. Utica stayed aggressive as Carly Stefanini scored at the 17:09 mark to give the Pioneers a 2-0 edge. The goal was assisted by Erica Sloan and Georgiana Santullo.
Utica carried its momentum into the second period and kept firing shots, yet Chatham was able to outshoot the Pioneers 3-2 in the first five minutes of the period. At the 7:29 mark, Erica Sheaffer found the back of the net on a beautiful unassisted goal to help Utica extend its lead to 3-0. In the closing seconds of the period, Hailey Modlin rifled one into the back of the net to give Utica a 4-0 advantage. Erica Sheaffer and Cortney Staniszewski assisted on the goal and helped the Pioneers take a 4-0 edge into the final period of play.
The third period featured plenty of shots, yet the defenses tightened up and forced many difficult shot angles. Each team recorded numerous blocked shots as the goaltenders played stellar in the final period to keep the score the same. Utica earned a 4-0 win and collected another UCHC victory under its belt.
Utica outshot Chatham 38-15 and was in control of the puck for the majority of the game. Angela Hawthorne continued her fantastic play as she recorded her fourth shutout this season and second in as many games. Erica Sheaffer led the team with two points, while Abby Lillis, Hailey Modlin, Erica Sloan, Cortney Staniszewski, Carolyn Whitney, Carly Stefanini, Georgiana Santullo, and Maggie Rylott each recorded one. Sloan has now recorded a point in twelve of the team's thirteen games this season. The Pioneers now feature five skaters with more than 10 points this season as Modlin, Lillis, Stefanini, Santullo, and Sloan have all surpassed that number.
No. 15 Utica (11-1-1, 8-0-1 UCHC) will face Chatham University on Saturday, January 14 at 7 p.m.
