Wilkes-Barre, PA - Alvernia University (8-5-3, 7-3-1) defeated Wilkes University (3-11-1, 3-8-1) 3-0, in UCHC women's ice hockey action Friday night at Wilkes.
The Golden Wolves rattled off 14 shots on goal in the first period before Abby Reisinger put Alvernia on the board first with under a minute to go in the first period. Gillian Evans and Lexi Hooper tallied the assists as the Golden Wolves took a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Alvernia would continue to control the game and apply pressure, firing nine shots in the first ten minutes with Wilkes' Emma Swansburg saving seven of them.
The Golden Wolves extended their lead to two when Sydney Bradley fired the puck into the back of the net thanks to assists from Julia Franklin and Kathryn Palmer as Alvernia took a 2-0 lead with five minutes left in the second period.
Wilkes rattled off six shots in the final four minutes of the period but Alvernia's Julia Beaven saved five of them to preserve the two goal lead heading into the final intermission.
The Colonels continued to attack the Alvernia goal, firing 20 shots in the first 16 minutes of the third period but could not find the back of the net as Beaven saved ten of the 20 shots.
The Golden Wolves would add one more goal for good measure, this one coming off the stick of Amber Steinhilpert as the Golden Wolves secured the 3-0 shutout victory. Bradley and Olivia Gilida provided the assists to Bradley.
Beaven got the shutout win in net for the Golden Wolves and tallied 23 saves.
Alvernia was led by Bradley with a goal and an assist, Steinhilpert and Reisinger both added goals. Gilida, Evans, Palmer and Hooper all recorded assists and Palmer led Alvernia with 15 face-off wins.
The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Wilkes to wrap up the weekend series. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.
