Alvernia Outlast Chatham in Key League Showdown

PITTSBURGH, PA - Three third period goals powered Alvernia University (10-5-3, 9-3-1) past Chatham University (8-11-1, 7-7-1) 3-2, in UCHC women's ice hockey action Friday night at Chatham. 

A scoreless first period saw both teams rattling off 14 shots with Chatham putting 11 on goal to Alvernia's ten. Alvernia's Julia Franklin and Kayla Moriarty both tallied two shots on goal in the first period as the game went into the first intermission with the score knotted at zero. 

The Cougars fired three shots in the first six minutes of the second period but Julia Beaven saved all three. 

Just under seven minutes into the period Sydney Bradley fired the puck into the back of the net and gave the Golden Wolves a 1-0 advantage early in the first period. Franklin and Kathryn Palmer provided the assists for Bradley. 

Chatham would continue to pressure the Alvernia defense, firing six shots in the next two minutes but the Golden Wolves defense held strong with Beaven saving five of the six shots to maintain the lead. 

Alvernia netted its second goal of the period when Franklin and Olivia Gilida assisted Amber Steinhilpert, who scored a power play goal just over halfway into the second period to make it 2-0 Golden Wolves. 

The Cougars answered just two minutes later when Allison James- Corser assisted Dena Akers to make it a one goal game, 2-1 Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves answered the Cougars almost immediately when Bradley tallied her second goal of the game as she poked the puck into the corner of the net and past the Chatham goalie to make it 3-1 Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves fired seven more shots in the final six five minutes as Alvernia took a 3-1 advantage into the final intermission. 

Chatham came out of the intermission and sent four shots at the Golden Wolves net in the first three minutes with Beaven saving two and Steinhilpert blocking two. 

The Cougars continued to fire shots but Beaven and the Alvernia defense held strong to preserve the 3-1 lead with ten to play in regulation. 

Chatham rattled off 14 shots in the next eight minutes before Lauren Carmody scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to one with under two minutes to play, Alvernia leads 3-2. 

Beaven tallied one last save in the final five seconds of the game to secure the 3-2 victory over the Cougars. 

Beaven got the win in net for the Golden Wolves and finished with 38 saves. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Bradley with two goals on five shots, Steinhilpert added the third goal and Franklin tallied two assists. Palmer and Gilida also added assists and Palmer led Alvernia with 14 faceoff wins. 

Alvernia is back in action tomorrow when they wrap up the weekend series at Chatham, game time set for 7:00 PM.
