Berry’s Overtime Goal Secures Weekend Sweep for Wilkes Over Lebanon Valley

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Billy Berry scored an overtime goal to secure the Wilkes men's ice hockey team's 4-3 win over Lebanon Valley College in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play on Saturday night, completing the weekend series with a clean sweep.
 
The Colonels record improves to 10-7-1 overall and 8-5-0 in UCHC play. The Dutchmen's record falls to 2-15-2 overall and 1-12-1 in conference play following the loss.
 
Wilkes was able to put two away in the first period, ending the first period up 2-0. Jimmy O'Kane was able to take advantage of a Colonels' power-play, finding the net at 8:48, with Matt Carlson and Joe Johnson each earning an assist. About four minutes later at 12:43, Patrick Roginski netted his first career goal, with assists from Nick Godfrey and Steven Spetz. The Colonels earned 30 shots in the first period and goaltender Michael Paterson-Jones tallied 12 saves.
 
Lebanon Valley had 19 shots in the first period and goaltender Ty Franchi had 17 saves.
 
In the second period Lebanon Valley was able to level the score, tying things up at two going into the third period with both goals from Harris Blackwood. The Colonels had 21 shots in the period, but were unable to find the back of the net. Goaltender Paterson-Jones ended the second period adding 12 saves.
 
The Dutchmen had a total of 19 shots in the second period and Franchi had 11 saves.
 
Lebanon Valley was first to strike in the third period, finding the net at 8:27 and taking a 3-2 lead over Wilkes. The Colonels didn't let that last long, as first year Cam Lowe answered back at 14:02, with assists from Johnson and Phil Erickson. Neither team was able to take the lead, sending the game into overtime. Wilkes had 24 shots in the period and Paterson-Jones added seven more saves.
 
In the third period the Dutchmen had 14 shots in the period and Franchi added 15 saves.
 
3:11 into overtime, Berry was able to put the game away, securing Wilkes' 4-3 win over Lebanon Valley. The Colonels had four shots in overtime and Paterson-Jones made one save.
 
Lebanon Valley had two shots in overtime and Franchi had three saves.
 
Paterson-Jones ended the game with a total of 32 saves in the game for the Colonels. Franchi tallied 46 total saves for the Dutchmen.
 
Wilkes won 32 of 72 faceoffs, with Berry winning 10, O'Kane winning eight, Max Cocchi winning seven, Carlson winning six, and Lowe winning one. Lebanon Valley won 40 of 72 faceoffs.
 
The Colonels had a total of 50 shots on goal in the game with Ben Stefanini leading with eight, followed by Johnson who had six, and Berry, Godfrey, and Erickson who each had five. Wilkes was one for five in power-plays. The Dutchmen had a total of 35 shots on goal in the game and were two for seven on power-plays.
 
With their win tonight, the Colonels are still alive in the fight for the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championship title.
 
The Wilkes men's ice hockey team returns to the ice on February 3rd, when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on Nazareth College at 7:00 p.m.
