REISTERTOWN, MD – The Lebanon Valley women's hockey team played host Stevenson University to a 2-2 draw before earning an extra point with a 1-0 shootout victory on Saturday afternoon in Maryland.
The shootout victory gives the Dutchmen (8-10-1, 5-8-1 UCHC) an important two points towards the conference standings heading into the few weeks of the season. The four-point weekend against the Mustangs (7-10-1, 5-8-1 UCHC) allows the Dutchmen to move a point ahead of Stevenson into seventh place in the conference standings.
The teams battled back and forth throughout the first period and LVC got on the board first with a Jade Julius goal in the final minute. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on the Mustangs and had a 14-10 shot advantage in the second period but were unable to score and the game remained 1-0 after two periods of play. Stevenson tied things up 1:54 into the third period and then took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal nearly at the 9:34 mark. The Dutchmen struck right back scoring a power play goal of their own at 13:38 as Grace Mayer lit the lamp off assists by Victoria Scurto and Katie Pounder. The goal was 37 seconds into the opportunity,
LVC held off a late power play opportunity and barrage of shots on goal to send the game into overtime. In the extra session, Katrina Strauts had the best opportunity to score but her attempt was stopped, and the game officially ended in a 2-2 tie. Playing for the extra conference point, Stevenson went first in the shootout. Both teams missed their first three attempts. Olivia Magneson stopped the Mutangs' fourth shootout attempt and then Brenna Mulcahy scored on hers to give the Dutchmen the victory.
