WILKES-BARRE, PA – For the second time this season, the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team and King's College skated to a 2-2 tie, but the Colonels earned the extra point scoring the only goal in the shootout Tuesday afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at the Toyota SportsPlex.
Wilkes stands 4-13-2 overall and 4-10-2 in UCHC contests. King's dropped to 0-17-2 overall and 0-14-2 in league games.
After two unsuccessful power-play opportunities, the Colonels took the 1-0 lead when Emma Guzdek drilled a one-timer off a feed from Rachel Morey at the 14:04 mark of the first period.
King's tied the game early in the second period when Olivia McTavish scored 2:43 into the frame. King's was then whistled for back-to-back penalties settling up the Colonels with a 5-on-3 advantage where Morey took a pass from Abby Miller and Abigail Barcless and slid a shot past the Monarch goalie to give Wilkes a 2-1 lead with :25 remaining in the second.
King's notched the game-tying goal goal with 6:59 remaining in regulation to send the contest into the five minute overtime.
Both teams saw ample scoring chances in the extra session with Addy Olson making a huge save on a King's breakaway with just over 1:30 on the clock.
From there it was Savanna Maxon who scored the lone goal in the shootout for Wilkes to give the Colonels the extra point in the conference standings.
Wilkes outshot King's 56-24 in the game. Olson finished with 22 saves in net for the Colonels while Syndey Dahl made 54 stops for the Monarchs.
Wilkes is back on the ice Friday continuing a five-game home stand welcoming Worcester State for a two-game set starting Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex.
