Paxton, Mass. (Oct. 27, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-0-0) book-ended its season-opener with goals in the first and third periods to take a 2-0 win over Anna Maria College (0-1-0) in non-conference women's ice hockey action at Anna Maria.
Alvernia started out fast and fired four shots at the Amcats in the opening eight minutes before Alvernia's Lexi Hooper broke through at the 8:36 mark off the assist of first year Sofia King to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.
The Amcats followed Alvernia's goal with two shots on the Golden Wolves, but Alvernia goalie Julia Beaven kept the Amcats off the board.
Alvernia killed off a power play just past the midpoint of the period and maintained a one goal lead through the end of the period. The Golden Wolves outshot the Amcats 12-5 in the first period.
Alvernia opened the second period firing shots on the Amcats as Alvernia opened the period on a power play. The Golden Wolves sent in eight shots on the Amcats during the power play, but could not break through.
The Golden Wolves would send 26 shots at the Amcats in the second period, but did not find the back of the net. Beaven stopped another eight shots by the Amcats in the second frame to keep it a 1-0 game going into the final 20 minutes.
The Amcats came into the third period with fresh life and sent four shots at Alvernia in the opening 90 seconds of the frame. But, Alvernia's Laila Tosi blocked two and two more sailed off target as the Amcats stayed off the board.
Alvernia responded with nine shots over the next six minutes and broke through the second time on the night as Julia Franklin found Sydney Bradley to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead with 11 minutes to play.
The Golden Wolves, behind Beaven, stopped six shots by the Amcats over the next six minutes as Alvernia kept Anna Maria off the board.
The Amcats and Golden Wolves traded shots over the final five minutes as Alvernia took the season-opener, 2-0.
Beaven finished with 19 saves over 55 minutes to pick up the win. Juliana Rodgers made two saves in the final five minutes. Hooper, Bradley, Franklin, and King finished with a point each for Alvernia, and Franklin finished with a team-high 15 faceoff wins. Tosi finished with a team-high two saves.
Alvernia is back in action tomorrow at 3:00 PM in the final game of the weekend series at Anna Maria.
