Spreadbury Scores Twice as Wilkes Shuts Out King’s, 3-0

PITTSTON, PA – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team shutout cross-town rival King's College 3-0 at the Revolution Ice Centre Wednesday afternoon in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play as Amanda Spreadbury scored two goals.

Wilkes improved to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in UCHC games, picking up three important points in the standings. King's dropped to 2-7-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the league.

Audrey Milne became the first Wilkes goaltender to earn multiple shutouts in the same season as she made 16 total saves and won her third game of the season. With the victory head coach Dave LaBaff tied the record for most coaching wins in program history with his eighth.

The Colonels controlled most of the offensive zone pressure in the first period but were able to only put seven shots on goal. Wilkes took 22 total shots in the period compared to eight for King's. The Monarchs had six shots on goal. Milne for the Colonels and Syd Dahl for the Monarchs made sure the game went scoreless into the first intermission which included each team killing off a power play opportunity.

Wilkes kept the offensive pressure going in the second period and broke through for the game's first goal 4:38 in when Tilly Wierdsma scored her second goal of the season. The first-year defenseman took the puck along the sideboards and skated toward the middle of the ice, making a nice move around a Monarchs defender, and beating Dahl with a wrist shot before two other defenders could close the space on her.

Spreadbury made it 2-0 at the 14:43 mark of the second as she scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Jordan Ferry assisted on the play as she took a King's turnover to the lower left of goal and played a pass to a streaking Spreadbury in the middle of the ice who buried a wrist shot in the upper right of the net. It was Ferry's third assist of the season.

Wilkes outplayed King's in the second period as the Colonels totaled 31 total shots with 20 shots on goal compared to seven total shots and four on goal for the Monarchs. Wilkes was 0-for-1 on the power play in the period.

Just over four minutes into the third period Milne stopped four consecutive shots to keep the two-goal lead.

Spreadbury notched her second of the game and sixth of the year as she collected her own rebound and backhanded the puck into the net for the 3-0 lead. Abigail Barcless stole an exit pass by knocking it down with her glove and then collected the puck and found Spreadbury open to the right of Dahl to pick up her fifth assist of the year.

Wilkes successfully killed off a five-minute power play by King's that started with 7:01 left in regulation as Milne made two saves and Haylee Bouchard blocked a shot to keep the shutout.

The Colonels totaled 16 shots with five on goal in the third period compared to nine total shots with six on goal for the Monarchs in the third period.

Wilkes outshot King's 32-16 on goal in the game and led in faceoffs 32-20. Sabrina Kotlarczyk won 12-of-13 faceoffs to lead the way for the Colonels. Spreadbury led Wilkes with six shots on goal and Wierdsma was a plus-3 in the game. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

Dahl made 29 saves for King's.

The Colonels are off until Friday, December 1 when they host Lebanon Valley College at the Toyota SportsPlex for a UCHC game starting at 5:00 p.m.
