Owings Mills, MD (December 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (8-1-1, 6-1-1 UCHC) completed the series sweep of Stevenson University (1-12-0, 1-7-0 UCHC) with a 4-2 victory over the Mustangs in a UCHC women's ice hockey matchup Saturday evening at Stevenson.
The Golden Wolves scored two goals in the first and third periods en route to the 4-2 victory over the Mustangs.
Alvernia Graduate Student Amber Steinhilpert recorded two blocks in the victory which put her at an even 100 for her career. Steinhilpert becomes the third Alvernia women's ice hockey player to reach the 100 block milestone with Olivia Gilida and Mackenzie Jackson both recording over 100 in their careers.
The Golden Wolves scored the first goal of the game in the eight minute of the first period when Khenzie Connick netted an unassisted goal to put Alvernia up 1-0.
Alvernia tallied its second of the period in the final minute of the first period after Alex Robertson scored a power play goal after assists from Riley Hill and Julia Franklin as the Golden Wolves took a two goal lead into the first intermission.
The Mustangs tallied the only goal of the second period when Carleigh Barwick assisted Franki Cappello on a power play goal to cut the Alvernia lead to one, 2-1 heading into the final intermission.
Stevenson equalized just 1:54 into the final period when Katelyn Reid found the back of the net after an assist from Abby Smith to tie the game at two.
Alvernia responded a minute later when Robertson and Steinhilpert assisted Riley Hill on another power play goal to give the Golden Wolves the 3-2 advantage with just over 17 minutes remaining in the third period.
Connick tallied her second goal of the night with nine minutes to play in the period to extend the Golden Wolves lead to two, 4-2 with 9:28 left.
The Mustangs sent six shots at the Alvernia net in the final nine minutes but Alvernia's Julia Beaven saved four and Steinhilpert and Sydney Bradley both recorded blocks en route to the 4-2 victory and secured the sweep.
Beaven earned the win in goal for Alvernia and recorded 25 saves.
Connick led with two goals, Robertson and Hill recorded one a piece and both Robetson and Hill tallied assists on the night. Steinhilpert and Franklin both added assists and Franklin led the Golden Wolves with 13 faceoff wins, going 13-17.
Alvernia is back in action on January 2nd when they host Morrisville State for a non-conference matchup at 3:00 PM.
