PITTSBURGH, PA – Graduate student Ingrid Holstad scored the game-tying goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation and the Golden Flyers prevailed in the shootout to earn the extra point after a 1-1 tie with Chatham on Saturday. Makenna Wiljanen and Holstad each converted their shootout attempts to lift Nazareth 2-0.
Nazareth, ranked 14th nationally, moves to 5-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in UCHC play while the Cougars are now 6-1-2 and 4-1-1, respectively.
Chatham scored late in the first period and that score remained for most of the game.
Despite a huge disparity in shots, Nazareth was down 1-0 with less than a minute to play in the game. Holstad was able to score her third goal of the weekend on Nazareth's 44
th shot of the game. Meredith Boettcher won a battle behind the net and threw the puck in front for Holstad to bang in to tie the game.
Nazareth held a 7-2 edge in shots in the extra frame before a shootout ensued to determine which squad would earn the extra point for conference standings.
McKinley Hoff began the shoot with a pad save before Wiljanen's low shot that snuck past the Cougar goaltender to go up 1-0. After another Hoff save, Holstad capped her spectacular weekend by going wide to the boards and cutting in for a wrist shot past the goalie.
Hoff made 10 saves in net for Nazareth.
Final shots were 52-11 in favor of the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth will have a quick turnaround, taking on No. 6 Hamilton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
