Alvernia Blanks King's, 5-0

Reading, PA - Alvernia University (11-10-3, 10-8-1) blanked King's College (2-20-2, 0-17-2) by a 5-0 decision on Friday evening in MAC and UCHC women's ice hockey action at Alvernia's Body Zone.

The Golden Wolves put up two goals in the first and second periods and added a fifth in the final frame.

Alvernia needed just 1:19 to get on the board with Olivia Gilida redirecting in a shot from Carolyn Burton to make it a 1-0 game.

The Golden Wolves held the Monarchs without a shot for the first 7:14 of action, and King's first two attempts on goal were blocked by Carolyn Burton and saved by Julia Beaven.

Alvernia then fired off five shots on goal to take the game to the midpoint of the first period, and it was Alvernia's sixth shot in two minutes that made it a 2-0 game in favor of the Golden Wolves. Julia Franklin found Kathryn Palmer in transition and Palmer took it the rest of the way and fired in at net for Alvernia's second goal of the game with 9:20 to play in the first period.

The Monarchs kept Alvernia from adding on to its lead the rest of the period as Alvernia took the 2-0 advantage into the first intermission. Alvernia finished the first period outshooting the Monarchs 13-4 on net.

Much like the first period, the Golden Wolves found the net early again in the second period. This time Abby Reisinger took the puck down the ice and scored an unassisted goal off the right post to make it a 3-0 game with just over 18 minutes to play in the second period.

Alvernia had a power play opportunity 11 minutes later, but was unable to convert. The Golden Wolves did find success, though, two minutes on an even strength goal off the stick of Lexi Hooper on the assist of Reisinger to make it a 4-0 game with five minutes to play in the second period.

Alvernia closed out the second period on another power play, but the Monarchs again were able to kill off the penalty as Alvernia took the 4-0 lead into the final 20 minutes. The Alvernia offense continued to overpower the Monarchs in the second frame as the Golden Wolves out shot kings 13-2 in the second period.

Alvernia started off the third period with three shots in the first two minutes, but King's was able to temporarily keep Alvernia from tacking onto its lead. Alvernia needed eight more minutes to make it a 5-0 game as the Golden Wolves again broke through, this time off the shot of Amber Steinhilpert via a pass from Alex Robertson.

The Golden Wolves then preserved the shutout for the final ten minutes as Alvernia fended off a power play and seven shots from the Monarchs to come away with the 5--0 win.

Five different players finished with a goal for Alvernia. Reisinger led the way with two points on a goal and an assist. Palmer finished with a goal and eight faceoff wins. Beaven finished with 11 saves as she came away with her fifth shutout of the season.

Alvernia closes out the regular season tomorrow at King's. Alvernia will then move into the UCHC postseason and host a semifinal game as a fourth seed.
