ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Ivey Lyden picked up a rebound after a save on a shot by junior Julia Holmes and wristed a shot past the Utica goalie to lead the Nazareth Women's Hockey team to a 2-1 overtime win Saturday to clinch the second consecutive regular-season UCHC title and the top seed in the upcoming tournament.
Nazareth will face Stevenson in the first round of UCHC Tournament action Wednesday. The game time is yet to be determined.
After Nazareth (19-5-1 overall, 18-1-1 UCHC) and Utica (20-2-3 overall, 17-1-2 UCHC) played to a 1-1 tie through regulation, the Golden Flyers took the momentum of the play in overtime and earned a power play opportunity midway through the five-minute period after a tripping penalty.
After the first Nazareth shot went wide of the goal, the Golden Flyers regrouped in the neutral zone and graduate student Abbey Luth carried the puck back into the offensive zone. A quick pass to Holmes led to a shot from the point that was saved but Lyden was on the doorstep to collect the rebound and send a shot over the goalie and defender on the ice and into the back of the net for the game winner.
Nazareth took the 1-0 lead in the second period as senior Olivia Miller-Johnson scored with passes from Luth and freshman Abby Flanagan for the 1-0 lead.
Utica tied the score in the third period with 4:33 left in the period on a power play.
The assists for Luth pusher her career total over 100 career points at Nazareth. The graduate student has 47 goals and 54 assists for 101 career points for the Purple and Gold.
Junior McKinley Hoff finished with 25 saves to earn the victory for Nazareth.
Prior to the game seniors Ally Watrous, Olivia Miller-Johnson, Makenna Wiljanen, Ali Fujiyoshi and Morgan Leuenberger were honored.
