CLINTON, NY – Sophomore Ivey Lyden scored the lone goal and junior McKinley Hoff made 25 saves for the Nazareth Women's Hockey team but a pair of second period goals for No. 5 Hamilton gave the Continentals a 3-1 win on Wednesday evening as they advanced in the NCAA Tournament.
Hamilton (21-5) will travel to Michigan to face Adrian College in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round. Nazareth ends its season with a 22-6-1 record.
Hamilton scored first on a play that was in question for several minutes after the score to determine if the goal would count or not. In the end, the referees decided that there was not enough information to overturn the goal and the Continentals 1-0 lead 4:25 into the game.
Just two minutes later freshman Corsica Skibinski took a pass from sophomore Maggie Pfalzgraf and slipped a shot between the legs of the Hamilton goalie but the goal was called back due to an offsides call at the blueline.
Late in the period, with Nazareth on a powerplay, the Golden Flyers knotted the game as Lyden sent a crossing pass into the back of the net. The play started in the corner as graduate student Abbey Luth dug the puck out and sent a short pass to fellow graduate student Delaney Carle who redirected the puck through the crease and to the stick of Lyden.
In the second period, Nazareth killed off a power play early but the Continentals found the back of the net at the midpoint of the period to take a 2-1 lead and then extended the lead five minutes later with a power play goal to take a 3-1 edge.
Nazareth had a pair of power play opportunities in the third period but could not find the back of the goal and Hamilton hung on for the victory.
