First-year standouts Shine for Nazareth in Weekend Sweep at Alvernia

READING, PA – Freshman Nikki Sharp scored twice and classmates Allie Zack and Alexis Kindred added single goals at the Nazareth University Women's Hockey team completed a weekend sweep over Alvernia University with a 5-1 win Saturday in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game.

Nazareth (9-5-1 overall, 9-0-1 UCHC) remained undefeated in UCHC play with the win.

In the first period, play began in a back-and-forth manner, until the Golden Flyers sustained a solid forecheck and scored the first goal of the game. Freshman Ella Cedrone won a battle below the offensive goal line and dished the puck to sophomore Abby Flanagan who buried the puck in the back of the net. Nazareth held the 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

Just over three minutes into the second, Alvernia (8-6-1, 6-5-1 UCHC) capitalized on an offensive zone faceoff and tied the game 1-1.

Near the end of the period, Sharp, who finished with three goals on the weekend, cleaned up a rebound after a shot from sophomore Sydney Gurlea to regain the lead for the Golden Flyers.

Just 47 seconds later, Nazareth extended the lead on an opportune powerplay. Zack scored from the half-wall with a pass from freshman Meredith Boettcher. The second period ended with Nazareth leading 3-1 and with a 26-12 shots on goal advantage.

Nazareth began the third period on the powerplay, and after intense net front pressure, Kindred was able to net her second goal of the weekend, with Cedrone and senior Julia Holmes earning the assists.

The powerplay success continued as Sharp buried the rebound of a sophomore Audrey Donahue shot, who was credited with an assist along with Zack.

Senior McKinley Hoff made 18 saves including 10 in the second period for her seventh win of the season.

The Golden Flyers return to play at home next Friday with a 7 p.m. game to start a UCHC weekend series against Neumann.
