STEVENSON, MD - The No. 10 Utica University women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep of the Stevenson University Mustangs with a 7-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
Seven different players scored for Utica including newcomer Autumn Mish, who notched her first goal as a Pioneer in the third period. Hailey Modlin, Erica Sloan, Cortney Staniszewski, Erica Sheaffer, Molly Pedone and Sydney Mintz also scored in the win.
Tess Barrett led the team with a pair of assists while Ava Suda, Cameran Evans, Madison Novotny, Angelina Garganese, Carly Stefanini and Maggie Rylott each had one.
Between the pipes, Angela Hawthorne picked up the win with nine saves and just one goal allowed on a Mustangs power play.
In all, Utica outshot Stevenson 60-10 and controlled 36 of 58 faceoffs led by Sheaffer's 10 and Modlin's seven.
The Pioneers wasted little time finding the board and Staniszewski got the party started at 2:50 in the first period. Midway through the period, Utica rattled off two goals in a 27 second span with Pedone finding the back of the net at 13:58 and Modlin at 14:25.
Stevenson found an opportunity late in the first following a Rachael DeLong slashing call. On the advantage, the Mustangs' Carleigh Barwick scored to trim the Utica lead to two goals as the first came to a close.
Despite 22 shots on goal in the second, the Pioneers couldn't capitalize on any while Hawthorne also kept Stevenson off the board to go into the final 20 minutes still ahead 3-1.
Utica regrouped offensively in the third with four goals coming in spurts. The first two scores came under a minute apart with Sheaffer coming through at 6:51 followed by Mintz at 7:20.
The final two Pioneer goals came on power plays as Mish recorded her first goal as a Pioneer at 12:47 while Sloan put the finishing touches on the win at 18:36 with Barrett recording her second assist of the game on the goal.
Utica (13-1-2, 10-0-2 UCHC) will travel to Oswego State at 3 p.m. on January 19 for its final non-conference bout of the year, as well as its last of six-straight road games.
