ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Sydney Gurlea scored twice and graduate student Makenna Wiljanen scored her school-record breaking 49th career goal as the Nazareth University Women's Hockey team delivered a 9-0 victory over Neumann University Friday night in the first of two United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) games in the weekend series at Tim Horton's Iceplex.
Nazareth (10-5-1 overall, 10-0-1 UCHC) scored twice in the first period as freshman Alex Kindred and sophomore Zoe Dupuis notched goals for the early lead.
Early in the second period, freshman Meredith Boettcher continued her points streak with a goal to increase the lead to 3-0. Boettcher now has 10 points in the last five games.
Less than two minutes later, freshman Ella Cedrone scored a power play goal for her fifth goal of the season and her team-leading 14th point of the year as she finished with a goal and two assists in the win.
In the third period, Gurlea scored less than four minutes for the first of her two goals to push the lead to 5-0 and less than a minute later, Wiljanen took a long pass from sophomore Audrey Donahue and raced in on the breakaway before burying a backhand short for the record-breaking goal.
Sophomores Corsica Skibinski and Abby Flanagan each scored to increase the lead and Gurlea capped the scoring with less than a minute to play for the final score.
Nazareth outshot Neumann (4-10-2, 0-9-2 UCHC) 75-5 and senior goalie McKinley Hoff recorded the win with her 18th career shutout.
The same two teams wrap up the weekend series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
