WILKES-BARRE, PA – Haylee Bouchard continued her record-setting first season, scoring two goals, including the game-winner in overtime to lift the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over cross-town rival King's College Tuesday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex.
The win pushed the Colonels unbeaten streak to six games improving their overall record to 12-6-1, standing 9-6-1 in UCHC play. King's dropped to 4-13-1 overall and 3-11-1 in conference games.
King's struck first taking a 1-0 lead 7:05 into the first period as Amanda Sokol found the back of the net thanks to assists from Maddie Vaughan and Sammi Stead. Wilkes had several strong chances to tie the game following the Monarch goal, but were unable to beat goalie Syd Dah, who notched ten saves in each period in the game.
The teams skated scoreless over the second 20 minutes of play with Wilkes seeing a variety of scoring chances throughout including one shot that rang off the post mid way through the frame.
King's kept hold to its one-goal lead early in the third period before Bouchard continued her scoring tear when she found a puck on the left side of the goal and skated in to blast a shot past Dahl to tie the game with 10:23 left in regulation.
The game stayed tied for the remainder of the period before Bouchard's heroics showed up again in overtime. The rookie took a pass from Jordan Ferry from behind the net and stick-handled around Dahl before depositing the puck into the back of the net :56 into the extra session to give Wilkes the important conference victory .
Wilkes held a 34-25 shot advantage throughout, winning 29-of-49 faceoffs. Colonels goalie Audrey Milne recorded the win finishing with 24 saves to notch her team-leading 10
th win of the season.
The Colonels take a break from UCHC play when they host Hilbert College in a two-game set on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop Friday is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex.
