Reading, PA - Alvernia University (11-9-3) played to a 1-1 draw with Albertus Magnus College (7-13-3) but the Golden Wolves took the shootout, 1-0 in a non-conference women's ice hockey matchup Saturday afternoon at BodyZone.
Both the Falcons and the Golden Wolves netted a goal in the second period and Sikke Ask buried the final shootout opportunity of the day to secure the shootout for the Golden Wolves.
How it Happened
- A scoreless first period was highlighted by the Golden Wolves sending 15 shots on goal to Albertus Magnus's 4 but the Golden Wolves could not find the back of the net as the game went into the first intermission locked at zero.
- The Falcons struck first in the second period when Moria O'Brien assisted Isabella Fedele to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second period.
- The Golden Wolves found a leveler in the final two minutes of the second period when Sophia King and Julia Franklin connected with Sydney Bradley who fired the puck past the Falcons goalie and tied the game at one heading into the final intermission.
- The Golden Wolves continued to pepper the Falcons goal and fired 21 shots on goal in the final period but Falcons goalie Christmas Johnson saved all 21 of them to send the contest into overtime knotted at one.
- Bradley fired two shots on goal in the overtime period, Alvernia sent five on goal and the Falcons recorded two but neither team could put the puck in the net as the game headed to a shootout tied at one.
- Julia Beaven and Christmas Johnson both denied the first two shootout opportunities and sent the shootout to the final turn.
- Molly Martin took the third shot for Albertus Magnus but was denied by Beaven to send it back to the Golden Wolves with a chance to win it.
- Sikke Ask skated up to center ice and took the puck toward the Falcons goal and buried the puck into the back of the net to secure the shootout victory for the Golden Wolves.
