COLMAR, PA – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team made more program history, this time earning its first postseason victory, a 1-0 decision in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Tournament Quarterfinals at fourth seeded Arcadia University's Hatfield Ice Arena Wednesday night on the strength of an Audrey Milne shutout and a goal by Haylee Bouchard.
The fifth seeded Colonels improved to 18-6-2 on the season and improved their current unbeaten streak to 13 games where Wilkes is 12-0-1. Arcadia finished its season with a 15-10-0 record.
The Dave LaBaff led team continues its first postseason journey on Saturday in the UCHC Tournament Semifinals at No. 1 seed Nazareth University in Rochester, N.Y. with puck drop scheduled for 4 p.m. The Golden Flyers are receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com national poll.
It was the UCHC points leader, Bouchard, who was the only player that was able to find the back of the net. The first year forward broke the scoreless tie 15:03 into the first period for what would stand up to be the game-winning goal. It was her team-leading 18th goal of the season and her 37th point. Anneke Bouma assisted Bouchard on the goal.
The Colonels had a chance to add to the lead late in the first period and early in the second with a 5-on-3 power play, but Arcadia blocked three shots and Hannah Bergeron made one save to keep it a 1-0 game.
Milne and the Wilkes defense were the story the rest of the way. Milne made seven saves in the first period, 14 in the second, and 15 in the third. She made four total saves on two power play opportunities for the Knights, one that went from late in the second period into the start of the third and another from the 2:37 to 4:37 marks in the third.
Bouchard provided the final play to seal the victory as she blocked a shot with 17 seconds left in the game after Arcadia went on a power play with 22 seconds left. Wilkes blocked 12 total shots including three by Bouma.
Milne earned the 36-save shutout for her fifth shutout of the season and 14th win overall.
Bergeron took the loss for Arcadia as she made 24 saves.
Tilly Wierdsma and Amanda Spreadbury led the Colonels with six shots each. Karahkwenhawe White led the Knights with eight shots as Arcadia outshot Wilkes 36-25. Wilkes won the faceoff battle 29-24 as Sabrina Kotlarczyk went 12-for-19 and Jordan Ferry 11-for-17. Wilkes was 0-for-2 on the power play and Arcadia was 0-for-3.
