ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Abby Flanagan scored a pair of goals in the first period to help the Nazareth University Women's Hockey team build an early 4-0 lead and the Golden Flyers went on to win a 5-0 game Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Tournament at the Tim Horton's Iceplex.
Nazareth (20-5-1 overall) advances to face Wilkes University at 4 p.m. Saturday in the tournament semifinal at home. No. 5 seed Wilkes was a 1-0 winner at No. Arcadia in its quarterfinal game. In the other half of the bracket, No. 2 Utica won 5-0 over Chatham and will host No. 3 Manhattanville who posted a 4-0 win over Alvernia. Utica will play Manhattanville at 7 p.m. Saturday in Utica.
The winners of each semifinal game will play for the UCHC Championship the following Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
Against King's (5-20-1), the Golden Flyers came out fast and took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Sophia Nortz with an assist from senior Kate Cascio just 2:26 into the contest.
Flanagan scored a power play goal at 10:54 to double the Nazareth lead as freshmen Alexis Kindred and Meredith Boettcher assisted on the play.
Less than four minutes later, freshman Ella Cedrone recorded her team-leading 26th point of the season with a goal with assists from senior Julia Holmes and sophomore Corsica Skibinski for a 3-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, Flanagan added her second goal of the period with a helper from sophomore Sydney Gurlea for the commanding 4-0 lead.
The King's defense held strong with the help of 39 saves from Monarch's goalie Syd Dahl over the final two periods and held Nazareth to just one goal over the final two periods. Dahl finished the game with 59 saves.
Nazareth capped the scoring in the third period with a power play goal by graduate student Ingrid Holstad and an assist from fellow graduate student Makenna Wiljanen.
