ROCHESTER, NY – Defensemen Ivey Lyden and Allie Zack each scored goals, goalie McKinley Hoff recorded another shutout victory as the Nazareth University women's hockey team scored a 4-0 victory over Wilkes University Saturday in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Tournament semifinal game.
Nazareth (21-5-1 overall) advances to the UCHC Championship game for the fourth consecutive season, while Wilkes has its best season in program history end with an 18-7-2 mark. The Golden Flyers will face the winner of the Utica vs. Manhattanville semifinal game being played Saturday night. The UCHC Title game will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Nazareth. Nazareth will attempt to win its third straight UCHC Championship.
The win for Hoff was her 18th of the season, setting a new school record for goalie wins in a season and the shutout was her seventh of the season and 22nd of her career.
Nazareth struck early against Wilkes as sophomore Sydney Gurlea took a perfect crossing pass from Lyden and buried the puck into the open side of the goal 4:42 into the game for the early lead. Graduate student Ingrid Holstad added a second assist on the play.
With two minutes left in the opening period, the Golden Flyers extended the lead and Zack stole clearing pass near the blue line and skated in alone on the goalie and scored for the 2-0 Nazareth lead.
In the second period, Lyden capped a scoring effort on a power play as she took a pass through the slot from graduate student Makenna Wiljanen and scored to make it a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the middle stanza. Holstad picked up her second assist of the game on the play.
Just 1:27 later, freshman Alexis Kindred scored with a pass from fellow freshman Meredith Boettcher for a 4-0 lead.
Besides the scoring and shutout effort for the Nazareth defense the team was credited with 14 blocked shots.
Wilkes goaltender Audrey Milne made 34 saves in the loss.
