FAIRPORT, NY – The No. 13 ranked Elmira College Soaring Eagles traveled to face St. John Fisher for the first matchup in program history. The Soaring Eagles opened UCHC play with a 3-1 victory over the Cardinals, as MK Boyle tallied a pair of goals and Alayna Toole scored one. Liv Rubin stood tall between the pipes with 11 saves on the evening.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Both teams were aggressive on the ice from the jump, seeing Elmira outshooting St. John Fisher 11-4 in the first period. The Soaring Eagles were also seen with two blocked shots compared to the Cardinals five.
Elmira opened the scoring early in the second period with a goal from Boyle assisted by Anna Lugge. With an immediate turn around, the Soaring Eagles snuck another goal past the cardinals off the stick of Toole assisted by Amber Meluzio and Mo McBride.
The Cardinals worked quick on offense, netting their lone goal of the evening in a power-play opportunity from Sophie Grant with Eibhleann Knox and Ellie Prantner picking up the assist.
The Soaring Eagles created a larger deficit with their third and final goal of the evening, seeing Boyle record her second of the evening. Iliana Smith picked up the assist to send Elmira into the third period with a 3-1 lead.
A defensively led third period saw Elmira outshooting the Cardinals once again, eight shots to four. The Soaring Eagles and Cardinals both picked up three more blocked shots, but Elmira held strong to their 3-1 lead to secure the victory.
