ROCHESTER, NY – The first-ever Battle of the Beaks matchup in women's hockey turned out to be a thriller as sophomore Amy Laskowski's third period goal lifted #5 Nazareth over St. John Fisher 3-2 on Friday night at Tim Horton's Iceplex. Nazareth moves to 7-0 overall and 3-0, while Fisher drops to 2-4-1 and 0-2-1, respectively.
All proceeds from ticket sales at the game will be donated to the Golisano Children's Hospital. In addition, the women's hockey program welcomed back a number of its former players for alumni weekend.
How it Happened:
- It was a wild and wacky first period with each team finding the net twice.
- Nearly seven minutes in, junior Nikki Sharp got things started with a tip in front of the net – assists were credited to Ave Meteyer and Mia Abruzzese. It was Sharp's fourth of the year.
- Just over a minute later, Fisher evened the score.
- Sophia Pittis helped Nazareth regain the lead three minutes later on the power play. She took an across the goal pass from Logan Marchese and one-timed it into the open net. Abruzzese picked up her second assist of the day.
- Fisher evened the score heading into the first intermission.
- The second period was littered with penalties, including a Fisher player earning a game misconduct for hitting from behind – neither team found the net in the period.
- The game-winning goal came at the midway point of the third period. Meteyer played a long pass up the boards to Sharp, who found Laskowski in all alone behind the defense. Laskowski dangled past the goalie and forehand-to-backhanded it into the net.
- Nazareth finished the game with an astounding edge in shots, 54-15.
