CASTLETON, VT – Leyton Pettypiece recorded three points on a goal and two assists to lead the St. John Fisher University men's ice hockey team to a 5-0 shutout of Vermont State University Castleton in the championship game of the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament on Saturday, marking the first shutout in program history. The Cardinals improved 7-3-0 overall, while the Spartans dropped to 4-5-1.
How it Happened
Less than two minutes before the end of the opening period, Pettypiece opened the scoring off a feed from Sam Ciappa and Mitchell Ferras. Addam Brunner and Kenneth Brodie set up Brendan Merriman to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead early in the second period.
The Cardinals pulled away in the third period with three goals. Ferras scored seven minutes into the period on a pass from Ciappa and Pettypiece, and Jonathan Sonedecker converted on a feed from Pettypiece and Carter Cwiklinski less than two minutes later. Ian Emery capped the scoring late in the third period when he fired in a pass from James Evans for the Cardinals' fifth and final goal.
Freshman goaltender Dylan Grover made 35 saves while recording the shutout.
