GENESEO, NY - The No. 5 SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team defeated the Fredonia Blue Devils in their home-opener Tuesday evening, 6-3. The Knights currently have a 1-0-1 record this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Geneseo found the back of the net early in the first period while on the power play. Filip Wiberg tallied their first goal at 16:32 with Luke Panchisin and Carter Diceman on the assists. Panchisin followed with one of his own with just under five minutes to play, picking up Marcus Torgner's rebound to extend their lead. Fredonia then tallied a goal to end the first, 2-1.
- In the second, Danny Bagnole picked off a Fredonia pass for the 2-on-1 breakaway, connecting with Sean Melso in front of the net for the Knights' third goal. Fredonia answered with one of their own a minute later to make it 3-2.
- Henri Spoof scored the fourth goal for the Knights on another 2-on-1 opportunity late in the second, carrying the pick into the zone and firing past the goaltender glove side. Nick Kovacs was credited with the assist.
- Fredonia came into the third period with nothing to lose, but the Knights remained in control, scoring on the power play to make it 5-2. Panchisin notched his second goal of the game, picking up the garbage at the net, with Diceman and Wiberg on the assists.
- Fredonia tallied a powerplay goal of their own for a 5-3 game with five minutes left to play. Despite the extra man aft4r they pulled their goalie, the Knights sealed the game with an empty-netter from Payne Gatewood, with Diceman and Guiseppe Fiorillo on the assist Geneseo secures their first win of the season at home, defeating Fredonia 6-3.
