BUFFALO, NY - On Saturday, the Chatham women's hockey team beat Buffalo State, 1-0 in a thrilling overtime game, for its first win of the season.
In the first period, the Cougars came out of the gates hot. They were relentless in their attack and, forechecking, able to draw three power plays. They mustered 10 shots on goal across the first 20 minutes but were unable to scratch across a goal. First-year goaltender Morgan Miller stood tall, stopping all 8 shots she faced in the period.
The Bengals flipped the script in the second frame, controlling much of the period. It was their turn to draw the Cougars into undisciplined hockey, and the Bengals used their 4 power-play opportunities to shift the momentum of the game. Miller kept making key saves, remaining perfect after stopping another 14 shots on goal.
The score was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation after both teams traded grade-A scoring chances. The game would be decided in a 3-on-3 overtime frame. At the 2:29 mark of the overtime period, Liv McTavish shot the puck off the Buffalo State goalie's pads, who kicked the rebound to first-year Willow Roberts, burying her first career goal, clinching the victory.
Morgan Miller earned her first career shutout after stopping all 38 shots she faced, including 2 in overtime. Isabella Allsopp and Clarissa Hayes led the Cougars' strong defensive play, finishing the game with two blocks each.
The Cougars will open up conference play on Friday, November 14th, when they travel to New Haven, CT, facing off against Albertus Magnus. Puck Drop is scheduled for 1 pm.
