Elmira Grabs Win Over No. 12 SUNY Geneseo, 4-3

GENESEO, NY – The Elmira College Soaring Eagles men's ice hockey team traveled to Geneseo, NY for a match with the Knights of Geneseo College in a UCHC conference matchup on Friday evening. Elmira scored three times in the first two periods and shut Geneseo down to grab the victory 4-3.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Soaring Eagles got off to a strong start both offensively and defensively. Elmira put the Knights goaltender to the test early, getting four shots on net during the first two minutes of the game. The Soaring Eagles were able to secure the powerplay early after a hooking penalty by the Knights. Within 13 seconds of the powerplay, Eric Bertelsen was able to get a shot by the Geneseo netminder. Assists on the play went to Lucas Stevenson and Brock Macdonald. The penalty kill was put to the test early as Elmira took two penalties throughout the remaining ten minutes of the first period. The defense stood tall to the task, killing both penalties and limiting Geneseo to just five shots in the first period of action while the Soaring Eagles tallied 14 shots on net.

Avery Rovira-Hewett was in goal for the Soaring Eagles and played a strong factor in the second period. He made some nice saves early in the second to keep the Knights off the scoreboard at the start of the second. The offense resparked their momentum to pull ahead 2-0 when Jake Terra found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Nicholas Bennett. Terra kept the offense moving for Elmira just two minutes later when he sent a pass to Austin Jerzak and Jerzak beat the goalie to make the score 3-0. The strong defense and great saves from Rovira-Hewett would continue and the Knights were kept off the scoreboard in the second period. The Soaring Eagles outshot the Knights 12-10 in the second and 25-15 at the second intermission.

Geneseo was able to get their first goal of the game a few minutes into the third period to make it a 3-1 contest. Rovira-Hewett made a couple of great saves during a key stretch of the third to keep the Soaring Eagles in front by two. Geneseo found the back of the net again with five minutes to play converting a 5-on-3 powerplay to make it a one goal game. Elmira would kill the rest of the powerplay, and Tyler Schwindt picked up a loose puck and deposited it into the empty net with a minute to play to make it 4-2 Elmira. Geneseo scored with six seconds remaining to make it 4-3, but the Soaring Eagles held on to capture the victory over the No. 12 nationally ranked Knights.
