Lugge's Hat Trick Fuels Elmira in 8–0 Win Over Hilbert

HAMBURG, NY – The Elmira College women's hockey team traveled to Hilbert College on Tuesday afternoon for a UCHC matchup. The Soaring Eagles came away victorious, winning the contest 8–0.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Soaring Eagles got on the front foot early, earning a power play on which they generated one shot, but Hilbert College did well to kill the early penalty. A Hilbert power play shortly after resulted in a strong kill by the Soaring Eagles, who did not allow a shot on goal. Just over nine minutes into the period, Abby Eselunas's shot from the slot found the back of the net off a feed from Anna Lugge. EC pressed to extend their lead, and three minutes later Lugge found Mo McBride for a one-timer blast that beat the Hilbert netminder. The Soaring Eagles took a 2–0 lead into the first intermission while dominating in shots, 23–1.

Elmira wasted no time in the second period, striking just 51 seconds in. A shot off the stick of Lugge made it 3–0 for the Soaring Eagles. After a successful EC penalty kill in which they allowed zero shots, Lugge danced past a couple of Hawks. Her initial shot was stopped by the Hilbert goaltender, but she quickly buried her own rebound for her second of the game, making it 4–0. With five minutes left in the period, Iliana Smith scored off the rush to extend EC's lead. Two minutes later, Lugge's shot from the slot completed the first hat trick of her career. Goals in the final two minutes from Piper Thompson and MK Boyle gave the Soaring Eagles a commanding 8–0 lead after two periods.

Hilbert College made a goaltending change going into the third period, and the Soaring Eagles continued to get pucks on net and create chances, but the new netminder stood tall for the Hawks. EC continued to limit chances, allowing just one shot on a Hilbert powerplay which was saved by Liv Rubin. An Elmira powerplay shortly after generated a few chances but they could not connect, and a scoreless third period assured the Soaring Eagles the 8-0 win, outshooting the Hawks, 24-2, in the final frame.
