Utica Secures 2-0 Shutout Over St. John Fisher to Sweep Home-and-Home Series

ROCHESTER, NY - Utica University's women's hockey team traveled to the Rochester Ice Arena to take on St. John Fisher in game two of a home-and-home set with the first-year program. After taking game one on home ice 5-1, the Pioneers applied high pressure for a second straight night, taking the road game 2-0. Alex Venning made 29 saves in the shutout victory, the first of her career and the team's first since mid-November. Utica will look to build upon the back-to-back victories in a two-game home series against Manhattanville next weekend.

Maddi Vitali led the orange and blue offense, opening the game's scoring before assisting on the team's second goal. Junior Angelina Garganese netted the insurance goal, her first of the season. Defenders Nora Pollestad and Veronica Houk added assists on Vitali's goal, the seventh of the season for both players, with Vitali earning the lone assist on Garganese's goal. Venning earned the start in net, making all 29 saves in a shutout victory, including standing tall through an 18-shot third period by the home squad.

The Cardinals were unable to find the back of the net in the contest, putting a total of 29 shots on target. Cordelia Wemyss, Eibhleann Knox, and Keira Reckley led St. John Fisher in shots, with each player taking four. Wemyss additionally recorded three of her team's nine total blocked shots, the only Cardinal with multiple. Brynn Bacak played in net, finishing with 57:49 of ice time and 37 saves on 39 shots.

Utica women's hockey returns to action next Friday and Saturday in a two-game home series against the Manhattanville University Valiants. Action in the Nexus Center is set for 4:00 pm on Friday, the 13th, before a 1:00 pm puck drop the following day.
