Nazareth Rallies to Earn 5-2 Win Over King's

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth overcame an early deficit Sunday to rally past King's for a 5-2 men's hockey victory at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 3-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. King's, coached by former Nazareth player Tom Seravalli, dropped to 2-9-0 and 1-6-0.

Nick Charron scored two goals for the Golden Flyers and Ryan Turse contributed one goal and three assists as Nazareth benefited from a 52-26 edge in shots on goal.

Despite the disparity, the Golden Flyers found themselves behind early as King's scored at 2:18 of the opening period. The score went unchanged until less than two minutes remained in the period and Turse scored his second goal of the season with assists from Carmine Alberga and Liam Beaudoin.

Nazareth went ahead 3-1 in the second period as Charron scored twice within a two-minute span early in the frame. His first goal, at 2:28, deflected in off his skate after an initial shot by Turse was turned aside by King's goaltender Brandon Daigle, who finished with 47 saves. Keith Davenport also gained an assist.

At 4:22, Charron scored again with assists from Jeremy Swartz and Turse.

King's scored its second goal later in the period, so Nazareth carried a slim one-goal lead into the final 20 minutes.

In the third period, Davenport delivered a key insurance goal -- his third tally of the season -- to extend Nazareth's lead to 4-2.

A tripping penalty to Nazareth's Cole Moore at 17:09 put the Monarchs on the power play, which became a two-man advantage when King's pulled the goaltender in favor of an extra skater. Nazareth capitalized with the open net as Liam Quinlivan scored his first goal of the season to seal the victory.

Freshman Matt Sayles gained the start in goal for Nazareth and made 24 saves for the victory.

The Golden Flyers close out their first-semester schedule with a home game Saturday against Oswego at 7 p.m. The game is being labeled as Hockey Fights Cancer with each team wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit the American Cancer Society.
