GLENSIDE, PA – Junior goaltender Matt Sayles approached his career-high total with 38 saves Saturday afternoon against Arcadia University and secured the extra point in the shootout for Nazareth University men's hockey team in a 4-4 tie.
Nazareth now stands 1-2-2 overall (1-0-2 UCHC) and Arcadia 1-3-2 overall (0-2-2 UCHC).
Arcadia opened the scoring up with a first period goal scored by sophomore Drew Iannucci, assisted by juniors Connor Dennis and Michael Hertzberg. Three minutes later, Naz junior Liam Quinlivan tied the game with an unassisted goal. Junior Ethan Louisos continued the momentum, as he allowed the Golden Flyers to take a one goal lead heading into the first intermission. Louisos was assisted by senior Matt Lakus and freshman Nate Mann.
In the second period, Junior Josh Dressler netted his third goal of the season off a long breakout pass from Lakus, pushing the score to 3-1 Nazareth. Arcadia fired back immediately with a shot from the point by junior Dylan Florit. Just 37 seconds later, junior Mike Kocsis managed to fire one past Sayles off a quick pass from junior Jake Frankenfield to tie the game 3-3 at the end of the second.
Twelve minutes into the third period, the Knights capitalized on a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity, as Kocsis netted his second goal of the night off a pass from Song and Arcadia once again took the lead. With just three minutes left in the game, junior Anthony Quinlivin scored off a broken transition play, and the game was once again tied 4-4.
Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime period and the game ended in a 4-4 tie. In the same fashion as the previous night, a shootout took place to determine which team would get the extra point.
Sophomore Logan Tobias shot first for the Golden Flyers and got in close to pull around junior goaltender Jeb Lindy for a top-shelf backhand goal. Kocsis was up first for the Knights but was turned aside by Sayles.
The score remained that way until freshman Bryce Battaglia answered with a shot over the left shoulder of Sayles to push the shootout to four rounds.
Freshman Daisuke Egusa began the fourth round with a slow approach and his patience paid off, as he deked right around Lindy for the advantage. Iannucci was up as the Knights last hope, but he was unable to get around Sayles, and the Golden Flyers claimed a consecutive extra point on the weekend.
Nazareth returns to Rochester next week for a UCHC home series against Alvernia University on Friday (7 p.m. ) and Saturday (4 p.m.) at Tim Horton's Iceplex.
