Nazareth Men Snap Streak with 5-4 Win over Rivier

PLATTSBURGH, NY – A pair of goals by sophomore Blake Frost including one late in the third period gave the Nazareth University Men's Hockey team a 5-4 win over Rivier University Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic Tournament in at Stafford Arena in Plattsburgh.

The win for Nazareth (2-8-2 overall) snapped a seven-game winless streak and gave the Golden Flyers their first win since November 4. The streak includes a pair of ties that ended with shootout wins and a pair of one-goal losses.

Frost tied the game with his first goal of the game after Rivier had taken the early lead with a goal 1:20 into the contest. The goal was a short-handed effort after a defensive zone steal by juniors Anthony Quinlivan and Jeremy Swartz. Quinlivan went the length of the ice before sliding a pass to Frost for the goal.

Less than two minutes later, junior Ethan Louisos gave Nazareth the lead with a steal at the blue line as he broke in alone and beat the Rivier goalie between the legs for a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Logan Tobias capped the first period scoring with a power play goal as he finished a run up the ice by Frost and took a pass in the slot for a one-timer past the Rivier goalie. Nazareth led 3-1 after one period of play.

The Golden Flyers extended the lead to 4-1 as Quinlivan picked up the rebound after a shot from the point by senior Liam Beaudoin and snuck a shot past the goalie with the second power play goal of the game.

Rivier (6-7-2) battled back with a pair of power play goals in a span of less than two minutes to trim the lead to 4-3. Nazareth took the one-goal lead into the final period.

In the third, Frost capped a run up the ice as he crossed into the offensive zone and skated across the face of the Rivier goal before firing a wrist shot past the glove side of the goalie for a 5-3 lead.

Rivier added a goal with 1:10 remaining in the game as a soft shot gave the puck just enough momentum to trickle into the goal after junior goalie Matt Sayles had made the initial save.

The Nazareth defense held strong as Rivier pulled its goalie for the extra attack for the final minute and held on for the win.

Nazareth will play at Oswego Tuesday with an 11 a.m. game.
