Chatham and Nazareth Skate to 3-3 Tie; Cougars Earn Extra Point in Shootout

ROCHESTER, NY - On Friday, the Chatham men's hockey team played game one of a two game weekend series against Nazareth. They would tie the game 3-3 and pick up an extra conference point with a 1-0 win in the shootout.

In the first period it was the Cougars who found the back of the net first when junior Nick Cyprian scored his first goal of the season on the power play. He was assisted by Nick Babbie and Kadsen Johnson. The Cougar lead would not last for long though as the Golden Flyers answered back and leveled the score at one with a little over a minute left in the first period and that would be the last score of the opening period.

After the intermission the Golden Flyers scored eight minutes into the second period. The Cougars answered back with another power play goal with 4:35 seconds remaining in the second period, this one was scored by Brendan Merriman. He was assisted by Nick Babbie and Nick Cyprian. That again tied the score, this time at two.

In the third period the Cougars scored just under three minutes into the final period. Jacob Ammar scored this goal assisted by True Crow. That was Ammar's first career goal and would put the Cougars ahead by a score of 3-2. With 33 seconds left in the third period the Golden Flyers were able to get another leveling goal. This one tied the game at three a piece. That sent the game to overtime.

In the extra period, neither team could score and that ended the game according to NCAA rules as a tie. In the shootout for conference points however, the Cougars would score on their first attempt by Nick Babbie. That would be the only goal scored by either team as the Cougars won the shootout 1-0 and took the extra conference standing point.

First year goaltender Geno Pichora saved 32 of 35 shots attempted by the Golden Flyers, in his first collegiate game, and had an additional two saves in the shootout. He ended the game with a 91.4% save rate.
