GENESEO, NY - The No. 4 SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team defeated Brockport on Friday night in front of a packed Ira S. Wilson Arena, earning the win with a score of 3-2. The Ice Knights remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 6-0 with the win, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Brockport struck first in the contest, scoring halfway through the first period. Despite constant pressure by Geneseo, they were unable to find the equalizer before the end of the first period and Brockport finished the opening 20 minutes with a 1-0 advantage.
- The Ice Knights wasted no time tying the game in the second period, scoring a power play goal just over a minute into the action. Sean Melso scored the goal for Geneseo, with Stefan Miklakos and Cooper Fensterstock picking up the assists.
- With eight minutes left in the second period, Tommy Winn put the Ice Knights ahead 2-1, finding the back of the net off an assist from Miklakos and Diarmad DiMurro. Brockport tied the game less than a minute later, but before the end of the second period Melso netted his second goal of the game to put Geneseo ahead 3-2 heading to the third period. Filip Wiberg and Bryce Howard assisted on the goal.
- Geneseo's defense, along with Adam Harris in goal, held strong in the final period, keeping the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard to earn the 3-2 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
- The Ice Knights have now won 17 straight games against Brockport, dating back to the 2014-15 season when they fell to the Golden Eagles in the SUNYAC tournament.
- Melso moved to fourth on the team in points with six on the season, totaling three goals and three assists, while Winn netted his second goal of the season.
