PURCHASE, NY - After a scoreless five minute overtime period, sophomore Cole Bauman scored in the second round of a shootout, getting the Nazareth men's hockey team the extra point following a 3-3 tie. Nazareth is now 2-3-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the UCHC, while Manhattanville is now 3-2-1 both overall and in the UCHC.
Manhattanville took the lead just 26 seconds into the first period. The Valiants held the Golden Flyers and they weren't able to put anything away in the first period.
The second period started with a Manahattanville lead, 1-0.
To get on the board, Nazareth took advantage of a power play to tie up the game during the beginning of the second period. With 11 seconds left of the Manhattanville penalty, junior Logan Tobias scored off a wrist shot that bounced into the back of the net. The goal was unassisted.
Nazareth had the next goal to get the lead. Anthony Quinlivan took a shot from the point and Will Halecki got the rebound to make the score 2-1.
Two minutes later Manhattanville tied up the game 2-2.
To end the scoring for the second period, Bauman scored off a rebound from Daisuke Egusa.
The score was 3-2 going into the third period.
The Valiants were able to tie up the game 1:26 into the third period. The rest of the third period was battled out between the two teams but the period ended with a score of 3-3.
Both teams entered the five-minute overtime period and had 2 shots each on goal.
In the shootout, Manhattanville went first. In the first round of shots, both teams were unable to find the net. In the second round, Manhattanville missed. Bauman was up for Nazareth. He skated in and took a wrist shot. The puck hit the upper right corner of the net and put Nazareth ahead. Manhattanville had one more shot in order to tie up the game, but was unable to find the net.
Matt Sayles had 24 saves in the shootout win.
The Golden Flyers play next against Buffalo State College at the Tim Horten's Iceplex on Tuesday, November 26 at 7 p.m.
