FREDONIA, NY - Chatham Men's Hockey (1-5-1, 0-5-1 UCHC) earned its first win of the season with a 5-3 victory over the Fredonia State Blue Devils (2-7-0, 1-3-0 SUNYAC) on Tuesday night at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
With three assists on the day, Nick Cyprian became Chatham's all-time leader in points. Cyprian now has 52 career points, breaking the record of 51 points set by Andrew Warhoftig (2019-23).
The Cougars got on the board first when Michael Roby collected a loose puck off the draw and put a wrister past the Blue Devils' goalie. Chatham then made it 2-0 when a neutral zone turnover by Fredonia turned into a breakaway and short-handed goal from Nick Babbie. The Cougars went on to kill the penalty, but the Blue Devils scored three minutes later on a breakaway of their own to make it 2-1. Chatham regained its two-goal lead when Oscar Saarinen redirected a Kadsen Johnson slapshot into the net, but the high scoring first period continued with Fredonia burying a loose puck around the crease with 1:14 left.
In the second period, the Cougars made it 4-2 with a snipe from Bekk McClaine off of feeds from Zack Conner and Nick Cyprian. Both teams netted power play goals in the third period, with Chatham's coming from Kyle Contessa off of Cyprian's record-breaking assist.
Shots on goal were 37-32 in favor of the Cougars. Cyprian and McClaine each tallied four shots on goal. McClaine was 12-of-20 in the faceoff circle, and goaltender Geno Pichora made 29 stops in net.
