PITTSBURGH, PA - On Friday the Chatham men's hockey team (2-7-1) opened its set against conference opponent the Manhattanville University (3-5-1). The Cougars came into this one looking for their first conference win, currently 0-5-1 in conference and earned a 3-2 win.
In the first period the Cougars attempted 14 shots on goal but were unable to convert on them. The Valiants were able to convert on one of their 14 shots on goal and took a 1-0 lead into the period break.
In the second period the Cougars were able to keep the offensive pressure on and held the Valiants to only five shots on goal. The Cougars were able to cash in twice on their 16 shots on goal to take the lead in the second period. To start it was Tyler Samodral scoring 12-and-a-half minutes into the period on an assist from Michael Roby. Roby would then score a goal of his own six minutes later to give the Cougars the lead. He was assisted by Brendan Pomerantz.
In the third period the Valiants tied the game at two when they cashed in on a power play five minutes into the final period. The Cougars would answer back with Roby scoring his second goal of the night assisted by Carson Granier. That would be enough to secure the Cougar win with a final score of 3-2.
Geno Pichora was between the pipes for the Cougars and made 29 saves on 31 attempts for a 93.5% save rate. Roby led the Cougars offense with three total points, two goals and one assist.
The Cougars and Valiants will play game two of the weekend double header in Hunt Armory on December 7 with a 3 p.m. puck drop.
