No. 3 Utica and No. 4 SUNY Geneseo Skate to 1-1 Draw in Battle of UCHC Unbeatens; Pioneers Nab Shootout Point

GENESEO, NY - No. 3 Utica (9-1-1, 6-0-1 UCHC) and No. 4 SUNY Geneseo (9-0-1, 6-0-1 UCHC) battled to a 1-1 tie after 65 minutes at a packed Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena Friday night. Utica took home a 1-0 shootout victory after Andrew Della Rovere converted in the seventh round to gain the extra point. Geneseo heads to Utica tomorrow night for their final matchup of the calendar year.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Ice Knights and Pioneers both came out flying in the first period. Geneseo dominated most of the period, generating 14 shots on goal while holding Utica to five.  

  • Junior forward Alex Dameski led both teams in the first period with three shots on goal. However, neither team was able to break the deadlock, and both teams went into the locker room scoreless.  

  • Despite a dominant first period from the Ice Knights, the Utica Pioneers added the game's first tally on the power play at 6:27 in the second, as Jakob Breault tallied.  

  • Geneseo found an answer to Utica's tally at 12:50 into the second period. Sophomore defender Sterling Wolters passed to sophomore forward Luke Panchisin, who found Alex Dameski for a one-timed goal. The score would remain tied after two.  

  • Both teams battled hard in the third with scoring chances on each net. The Ice Knights killed off a crucial 5-4-man advantage in the final minutes of play to send the game to overtime.   

  • Overtime saw three shots on goal from both Geneseo and Utica. Each team had their chance to win but neither team could break the draw.  

  • Utica went on to win the shootout in the seventh round with a score of 1-0.  

QUICK FACTS: 

  • Geneseo enior goaltender Adam Harris started in net and recorded 27 saves for a .964 % save percentage. Utica senior netminder Bryan Landsberger stopped 29 shots, including 14 in the opening period.

  • This was the fourth all-time meeting between the two New York college hockey powerhouses. The last meeting ended with a 3-0 Geneseo victory in 2021 in Utica.   

  • Geneseo recorded 30 shots on goal while giving up 28 shots on goal to Utica.
