CORTLAND, NY - For the second-straight game the Nazareth men's hockey team knocked off a ranked opponent as the Golden Flyers dumped No. 13 Cortland 5-4 Friday night. Trailing 4-2 in the third period, Nazareth erupted with three-straight goals to earn the come-from-behind victory.
Anthony Quinlivan scored twice in the win for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth's overall record is now 6-4-2 with the win, while Cortland drops to 8-4.
Cortland scored the first goal of the game, 7:28 into the first period.
Quinlivan responded a few minutes later to tie-up the game. He had helpers from Joey Schaefer and Mark Meinecke.
Cortland was able to put one in with three minutes left in the period as the score was 2-1 going into the first intermission.
The Red Dragons started the second period with a power-play goal, making the score 3-1.
At 6:52, Quinlivan and Schaefer were able to make another goal happen, with help from Charles Ross. Quinlivan had a diving shot in the slot to make the score 3-2.
Cortland was able to close out the second period with one more goal.
The third period belonged to Nazareth.
Logan Tobias got the third period going by setting up the first goal scorer of the period, Blake Frost. Frost buried the puck home, bar-down in the top right corner of the net making the score 4-3.
Two power-play goals came from this game, one from the Red Dragons and another, seven minutes into the third period from the Golden Flyers. Lucas Stanojevic took advantage of this power-play and was able to tie up the game 4-4. Assists came from both Charles Ross and Ethan Louisos.
Daisuke Egusa scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the third. Tobias had great stick skills and found Egusa, backdoor in front of the net. Antoine Lucier also assisted the final goal with Tobias making the score 5-4 with 10 minutes left in the third period.
Despite two Nazareth penalties and power play opportunities for the Red Dragons, the Golden Flyers were able to fight them off with excellent defense and penalty killing.
Dylan Wiemer ended the game with 27 saves to earn the win in net.
The Golden Flyers wrap up their weekend at the Tim Horton's Iceplex against the Oswego Lakers on Saturday, January 11 at 5 pm.
